Fort Keogh Officers' Quarters, Circa 1880--Miles City, Montana
Fort Keogh was begun in 1876 on the great plains of Eastern Montana, as a result of the Custer massacre. At its height, the range of the fort was massive, over 64,000 acres. Over time, some of that property was released and became the location of Miles City. The rest is now under management of the USDA, in the form of an agricultural research center.
My photograph (top) shows one of the remaining buildings of the old fort, the officers’ quarters. The historic photo, dated 1880, (bottom) shows that once there was a long row of structures like this one.
